High street property in transition

What have we been doing during lockdown?  Collaborating with the key people across West Yorkshire who work at the sweet spot between creative industries development, regeneration and assets herunterladen.

In January, Creative Space was appointed by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority with funding from One Public Estate.  The aim was to advocate for temporary use of buildings and land owned by the various councils in Leeds City Region.  This builds on our long track record of guiding temporary uses of buildings, notably planning and mobilising Fruit Market in Hull ten years ago.   We undertook this 2020 project with support from our Leeds-based partners, East Street Arts, the largest suppliers of artist space outside of London herunterladen.

The real need was to support local authorities to make better use of empty properties and to support the creative and cultural sectors.  As a team, our aim was to bring inspiration and practical know-how from projects we’ve worked on over the past 15 years and to amplify lessons learned from small and large-scale projects across Europe team viewer kostenlos herunterladen.

Within weeks of our initial roundtable with eight local authorities, the UK went into lockdown and it became clear that our brief needed to adapt to what was likely to be a very different set of circumstances for town and city centres wie kann man soundcloud liederen.

There will be a profoundly challenging period to which we will all have to adapt.  We can anticipate that business closures will upend some of the places we have seen as the cornerstones of our high streets.   Our centres will not return as they once were.   Where transition was likely to have been a relatively slow, iterative process, the consequences of the pandemic will accelerate change free stockfoto it.

The short- term economic impact may be severe.  Our high streets and urban centres will require new forms of pro-active interventions to help them adapt to this new reality.  Accelerating new types of uses of vacant properties will be key to rebuilding confidence, footfall and the economy herunterladen.

Our team concluded that meanwhile use should be considered as a stepping-stone rather than a stopgap until an imagined return to the status quo.  As we start to rebuild our economy and our communities following the initial impact of the pandemic, we will need to embrace meanwhile use as part of a journey towards new and different long-term uses of buildings and land wikipedia seiteen.

Temporary use can perhaps be better described as transitionary use as we reshape our high streets with a wider mix of not-for-profit organisations, independents, artists, makers and young people exploring new ideas.  New ways of thinking about how values are generated from properties will be required herunterladen.

Our work provided prompts and guidance for local authorities seeking to explore meanwhile uses for their empty properties but these are equally relevant for a wider set of interventions on high streets across the city region and the UK sharepoint multiple files.
