Pannier Market at Granary Wharf, Leeds

Granary Wharf, Leeds

In 2010 Creative Space was appointed by isis Waterside Regeneration to manage animation of the public realm at Granary Wharf in Leeds and to be the commercial agent for some 3000sqm of retail and leisure commercial space at the high profile development in the city centre, adjacent to the River Aire, the Leeds Liverpool canal and the mainline railway station.

During this period Creative Space has negotiated with three new retail occupiers, developed and operated a brand new monthly market (Granary Wharf Pannier Market) and organised a programme of events linking to key festivals and activities across the city including Light Night and Leeds Waterside Festival.

Additional events included The Big Knit and a live sheep shearing event, The Big Picnic and a residents’ street party. During the summer the Pannier Market grew from a 35 stall event to 85 attracting over 10,000 visitors during the summer programme and helping raise the profile of Granary Wharf as a residential and destination location.

Creative Space devised the strategy to animate the public realm, developed and promoted a new city centre market by working closely with Leeds City Council and developing a network of independent retailers. The programme included commissioning urban story walks from Joseph Collins who developed a new story about the social evolution of Leeds focused on Granary Wharf.
